In April 1999 Ron Uptegraph popped his first batch of Kettle Korn in his back yard. After some more “practice” and lots of preparation he was ready for business with a title inspired by his only grandchild at the time, 3 year old Gabrielle.

Two weeks later at Cowtown Farmer’s Market in Woodstown, N.J., Pappy’s Original Old Fashioned Kettle Korn was introduced. He and his wife Eileen, both full time school teachers, began spending every weekend at a craft fair, wine festival, air show or any other event that would book them in those early days. The biggest challenge was to educate event planners about what Kettle Korn was and the “show” that went with it.

It was a new and exciting time as Pappy and his wife traveled throughout New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware to events where they offered samples of this “a little sweet and a little salty” new phenomenon. Several of those weekends over the next year and a half were spent at Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse, Pennsylvania.

In 2001 Kitchen Kettle invited Pappy’s to be a full time shop in their village. Beginning with a canopy, followed by an open air gazebo, and eventually a permanent building Pappy’s Kettle Korn had found a home and the show began! Each morning customers and shop owners became accustomed to the ringing of his triangular bell as he popped his first batch and bellowed “GOOD MORNING KITCHEN KETTLE!  PAPPY’S MAKING FRESH KETTLE KORN! ”.  Each day, many in 90 degree summer days, Pappy spent his time teasing the customers, entertaining them with “Korny ” jokes, or singing them jingles….”Pappys Kettle Korn is so fine, you won’t mind waiting in line”. His love of interacting with customers was obvious and he soon had long lines of loyal customers returning for both the Kettle Korn and his antics.

In 2008,  at the age of 65  he retired and passed the business on to his son, Greg. It was an experience that was recalled fondly and brought many smiles for the next ten years. He was proud of what he accomplished and proud that his son was carrying on the tradition.

In August, 2018 Pappy lost a hard fought battle with cancer. His wife Eileen, son Greg, and two oldest grandchildren, Gabrielle and Cassidy are often in the shop. They are grateful for the many customers who share his legacy with them. To all those who come and ask about Eileen and him, get their personalized buckets refilled for 50 cents, or just laugh and reminisce about his crazy antics we say “Thank You”.  We appreciate you and look forward to seeing you at Kitchen Kettle Village.
